Madrid Urbanism

The architecture of the first half of the 20th century is characterized by the appearance of new styles: modernism, rationalism and functionalism, as well as the use of new materials, and construction techniques (like the use of concrete). Some of the most representative buildings of this time are the Building of the National Telephone Company of Spain, the San Miguel Market, the Author’s Society building and the Communications Palace.

Starting from the second half of the 20th century functionalism and the prevailing futuristic style of North America were imposed. Any type of decoration that was not necessary for the functionality of the building was eliminated and aluminium and crystal were the main materials used.

The most outstanding building of this period includes the Gimnasio Maravillas, Torrespaña, La Torre de Madrid, tore Picasso and the Banco Bilbao Vizcaya building.

Today avant-garde and modern Madrid can be seen on the Gran Vía and the Paseo de la Castellana. The Gran Vía is one of the most important commercial and entertainment centres of the city. On the Paseo de la Castellana, which crosses the city from north to south, some important modern buildings and the most elegant hotels in the capital can be found.
