It was designed by the architect Ventura Rodriguez. Roberto Michel and Francisco Gutierrez sculpted the lions and the statue of de goddess in 1781. The old fountain had two sculptures on the sides, a waterspout and a bear, from which water sprouted. Later they were substituted by the figures of two children.

This sculpture by Juan Pascual de Mena represents the Roman God of the Seas on a shell pulled by horses, with a trident in the left hand and a snake coiled in the right. The fans of the Athletic de Madrid celebrate their victories here.
