It was ordered to be built by Felipe the 5th in 1714 to hold the Compañías de Reales Guadias de Coprs. Pedro de Ribera was the elected architect for this project, which took him six years to complete.
Its interior was restored a few years ago and at the present time it holds temporary exhibitions, concerts and other cultural activities. It is also the headquarters of the cultural center and the Historical Archive of the city, as well as the Newspaper archive of Madrid.
