It is the most complete and most visited museum of contemporary art in the world. Its 23 halls exhibit 20th century paintings and Spanish sculptures as well as different works by foreign artists. Zuloaga, Solana, Juan Gris, Miró, Tapis, Antonio Saura and Pablo Gargallo can be admired but the most outstanding painters are Picasso and Salvador Dalí. The Guernica is the most important and universal work of Picasso. He painted it in 1937 after the bombing of this city by tha Germans during the Spanish Civil War. Apart from this masterpiece, there are many other works of his earlier years. The other great artist of contemporary paintings is Salvador Dalí, who has a hall dedicated to his paintings. The rest of the buildings is used for footings. The rest of the building is used for foreign artists and temporary exhibitions.

The museum is located in a building that was San Carlos general Hospital. It was designed by Sabatina during the reign of Carlos the 3rd It was restored at the end of 1970s
